Coding and Decoding:
What is coding-decoding?
Coding-Decoding is the simplest form of verbal intelligence reasoning. In this type of question, a set of letters or numbers are given in code in which they have to be deciphered or decoded. The coding-decoding can be divided in to two types:
- Letter Coding – In this type certain letters of alphabet stand for certain other letters of alphabet. For eg: CROWN = DSPXO
In this each letter is replaced by its following letter in the alphabet i.e. C by D, R by S and so on.
- Number Coding – In this type letters are changes by the number of letters in their corresponding alphabetic position. There are several methods of number coding:
- Position numbers of letters remain the same. For eg: CLEAR = 3125118
- Position numbers of letters are added. For eg: FEAR = 30
In this case, position number is added i.e. 6 + 5 + 1 + 18 = 30 - Position numbers of letters are added but at the same time a certain number is subtracted, added, multiplied or divided. For eg: FEAR = 120
Here, (6 + 5 + 1 + 18) * 4 = 30 * 4 = 120
Aptitude Questions (Coding and Decoding):
1. In a certain code language ‘GOAL’ is written as ‘HPBM’. How will ‘POST’ be written in that code?
A) QPTS
B) QPST
C) QPTV
D) QPTU
E) None of these
View Answer
ANSWER: OPTION (D)
Explanation:
GOAL => HPBM
In this each letter is replaced by its following letter in the alphabet i.e.
G + 1 = H
O + 1 = P
A + 1 = B
L + 1 = M
So, in the same way
POST = QPTU
P + 1 = Q
O + 1 = P
S + 1 = T
T + 1 = U
2. In a certain code language ‘PINK’ is written as ‘NGLI’. How will ‘REST’ be written in the same code?
A) PMLR
B) PCQR
C) PBQR
D) PQRE
E) None of these
View Answer
ANSWER: OPTION (B)
Explanation:
PINK => NGLI
P – 2 = N
I – 2 = G
N – 2 = L
K – 2 = I
So, in the same way
REST => PCQR
R – 2 = P
E – 2 = C
S – 2 = Q
T – 2 = R
3. In a certain code language, ‘LOSE’ is written as ‘MQVI’. How will ‘GAIN’ be written in that code?
A) GCLR
B) HLCR
C) HCLS
D) HCLR
E) None of these
View Answer
ANSWER: OPTION (D)
Explanation:
LOSE => MQVI
L + 1 = M
O + 2 = Q
S + 3 = V
E + 4 = I
So, in the same way
GAIN => HCLR
G + 1 = H
A + 2 = C
I + 3 = L
N + 4 = R
4. In a certain code, language ‘RUMSZ’ is written as ‘PRINT’. How will ‘FUMSQ’ be written in that code?
A) PRICK
B) BRING
C) DRINK
D) DREAM
E) None of these
View Answer
ANSWER: OPTION (C)
Explanation:
RUMSZ => PRINT
R – 2 = P
U – 3 = R
M – 4 = I
S – 5 = N
Z – 6 = T
So, in the same way
FUMSQ => DRINK
F – 2 = D
U – 3 = R
M – 4 = I
S – 5 = N
Q – 6 = K
5. In a certain code language ‘FAVOUR’ is written as ‘ECURTV’. How will ‘FOSTER’ be written in that code?
A) GQTWFV
B) EQRWDV
C) QEWRVD
D) EQRVDV
E) None of these
View Answer
ANSWER: OPTION (B)
Explanation:
FAVOUR => ECURTV
F – 1 = E
A + 2 = C
V – 1 = U
O + 3 = R
U – 1 = T
R + 4 = V
So, in the same way
FOSTER => EQRWDV
F – 1 = E
O + 2 = Q
S – 1 = R
T + 3 = W
E – 1 = D
R + 4 = V
